Denmark attracts hyperscale operators with cool climate, green power, political stability and strong fibre infrastructure. The bottleneck is grid connection — 70 MW+ capacity can require 5-10 years of waiting from Energinet. This guide covers viable sites, district heating integration and the institutional capital structures behind them.
Hyperscale vs. colocation — different requirements
Hyperscale (Microsoft, Google, AWS, Meta) requires 50,000-1,000,000 m² sites with 70 MW-1 GW power capacity, cooling-water access (closed-loop from ~150,000 litres/day; evaporative far higher) and ideally district heating waste-heat off-take. Typical site search horizon: 18-36 months.
Colocation (Equinix, Digital Realty, Bulk, atNorth) typically targets 3-10 MW sites at 5,000-15,000 m². Often greenfield development on light industrial land. Faster time-to-market — 12-18 months from site secure to live.
The Danish government supports data center investment via streamlined permitting and clear waste-heat integration framework. 2025 legislation requires new hyperscale projects to deliver waste heat to local district heating networks, creating additional revenue.
Key Danish locations 2026
West Denmark (Jutland) has the strongest grid capacity and clearest path for hyperscale. Active corridors: Esbjerg, Fredericia, Aabenraa, Aalborg. Existing presence: Apple (Viborg), Google (Fredericia), Meta (Odense).
Greater Copenhagen is suited to colocation due to fibre density and customer proximity but limited for hyperscale due to grid constraints. Active sites in Ballerup, Høje Taastrup, Glostrup.
